vegware compostable coffee cup recycling manchester coffee festival

We’re Manchester Coffee Fest’s official sustainability partner!

We love a good coffee festival. Alongside the amazing smells and sights of coffee being made and the delicious samples on offer, it’s great to see new trends and innovation on the coffee scene. That’s why we’re delighted to announce we’re Manchester Coffee Festival’s first ever official sustainability partner!

Sustainability is a new focus for the festival. Spurred on by reports earlier in the year of coffee cup recycling issues, festival organisers Cup North decided it was time to take action. As well as inviting Vegware to be their official sustainability partner, the festival has also created the Vegware Sustainability Hub – an area dedicated to workshops and talks on waste and recycling issues in the coffee industry.

Taking place on the 5th-6th November, the festival will also bring together independent coffee shops, roasteries, importers and baristas from across the north of England for a weekend of talks, tastings and even a coffee-themed cinema.

Don’t miss Vegware’s workshop on coffee cup recycling, explaining the issues the UK currently faces and the compostable solution. Hosted by our Recycling Advisor Kate Chambers, you can catch us at 12pm on Saturday 5th and 2:30pm on Sunday 6th November.

vegware compost aramark bny mellon waste prevention management

Vegware wins Footprint Award for helping Aramark site go zero waste!

Exciting news! We won the Waste Management and Reduction award at the Footprint Awards last night for helping Aramark catering go zero waste at BNY Mellon.

The award is in recognition of the work Vegware did with no fewer than five companies to help Aramark eliminate landfill waste  from their catering operations at BNY Mellon. This was achieved by organising the recycling of our compostable packaging with foodwaste, providing fertiliser for local farmers and bio methane to heat homes in London.

Despite facing stiff competition, Vegware were delighted to walk away with a prestigious Footprint award. The judges commented that the work showed ‘great collaboration and great initiative’!

University Surrey Simon Booth Vegware Green Tree

University of Surrey chooses Green Tree collection to communicate eco ethos

Vegware_collection_GT_group_W8.5CARRW-GT_VDW-G12_VGGSH2-GT_R500-GT_salad_snack_combo_800xWe’ve just launched the Green Tree collection in honour of our Queen’s Award for Innovation win. This stylish grab & go collection features a word-cloud motif celebrating sustainability and Vegware’s eco credentials – just like our award!

Like all of Vegware’s products, the compostable collection replaces plastics with plant materials with a lower carbon footprint. It’s already in use at the University of Surrey, who chose it for its clear sustainability-focused messages.

Director of Hospitality Simon Booth explains:

“Historically, cost was the most important factor for caterers, but the University of Surrey looks at the whole picture. Landfill costs are only going up, and a solution that removes this factor completely really helps us from a business perspective.

The University of Surrey is very environmentally conscious. When we realised that over 80% of the landfill waste produced was coming from retail areas, our caterers and estates got together to address the issue. The most positive step forward was to switch to a compostable range of foodservice products. Vegware was the perfect partner as they had the vision to help create the Green Tree collection, which meets all our needs. This year, we’re using the collection for our conferences and location business.”

Vegware wins 2nd Queens’ Award for unique zero waste support – our 60th award!

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve won our second Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

To make matters even more exciting, it’s our 60th accolade – and it’s awarded on the Queen’s 90th birthday in her 50th award year. First winning in 2013 for Sustainable Development, the latest award is in recognition of the innovative work Vegware is doing to help businesses recycle used packaging and food waste. We’re celebrating with our new film, and by launching our Green Tree collection. Our MD Joe Frankel says:

“Winning the Queen’s Award again is a huge honour. The journey has been fantastic – when we started, the only option for used takeaway packaging was to go to landfill or incineration, as most still does.

But we changed that by creating the widest range of genuinely compostable plastic-free catering disposables, and simultaneously working closely with the waste sector to ensure recycling options for clients all around the UK. With the current appetite for recycling, we are soon announcing a crowdsourcing campaign to create additional composting routes. We are proud to be a sustainability leader in foodservice.”

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers for their ongoing support – we hope you can join us in celebrating this award win.
