vegware compostable recycling packaging debate

We’re in the Sunday Times SME Export Fast Track 100!

We’re delighted to announce that Vegware has been placed at No. 50 in the Sunday Times SME Export Fast Track 100.

The Sunday Times Lloyds SME Export Track 100 ranks Britain’s 100 small and medium-sized (SME) companies with the fastest-growing international sales over the previous two years.

The position recognises Vegware’s global expansion. We operate in four continents, providing customers with eco packaging, waste consultancy and bespoke branding services. With customers from Barbados to the Seychelles, Vegware is set for further expansion in the coming year.

Congratulations to everyone else on the list, and a massive thank you from the whole Vegware team to our customers and supporters across the world.

Bagasse plate tableware bowl vegware compostable eco packaging

Vegware is making waves in Barbados

Sun, sea – and Vegware! Campaigners in Barbados have been calling for ways to reduce polystyrene on this Caribbean island. Around seven 40-foot containers of polystyrene products go to their landfills every week, putting a huge strain on the environment and the limited available landfill space.

Vegware’s bagasse takeaway boxes and tableware are made of recycled sugarcane, which can be composted in home or industrial composting. Once it’s broken down, the resulting compost helps plants to grow. Bagasse also has 99% less carbon than polystyrene – so it’s eco friendly from start to finish.

Bico Ltd, the leading manufacturer of ice-cream and frozen desserts in Barbados, have been spreading the word about using Vegware. Edwin Thirwell, Executive Chariman explains:

“We know about the health and environmental risks posed by polystyrene packaging which is widely used in Barbados on a daily basis, and we must do what we can to reduce these risks and protect consumers. We have found a solution in Vegware, and we are urging the public to pay attention to the effect of their choices on our natural environment and their personal health.”

Vegware wins 2nd Queens’ Award for unique zero waste support – our 60th award!

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve won our second Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

To make matters even more exciting, it’s our 60th accolade – and it’s awarded on the Queen’s 90th birthday in her 50th award year. First winning in 2013 for Sustainable Development, the latest award is in recognition of the innovative work Vegware is doing to help businesses recycle used packaging and food waste. We’re celebrating with our new film, and by launching our Green Tree collection. Our MD Joe Frankel says:

“Winning the Queen’s Award again is a huge honour. The journey has been fantastic – when we started, the only option for used takeaway packaging was to go to landfill or incineration, as most still does.

But we changed that by creating the widest range of genuinely compostable plastic-free catering disposables, and simultaneously working closely with the waste sector to ensure recycling options for clients all around the UK. With the current appetite for recycling, we are soon announcing a crowdsourcing campaign to create additional composting routes. We are proud to be a sustainability leader in foodservice.”

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers for their ongoing support – we hope you can join us in celebrating this award win.

New York City bans polystyrene from 1st July 2015

Polystyrene foam ban in New York City VegwareFrom the 1st of July 2015, foam polystyrene containers are to be banned from the eateries of the Big Apple.  In December 2013, the City Council passed a measure that gave foam-container manufacturers a year to prove that the material could be successfully recycled.

New York is the latest of over 100 cities around the world to ban polystyrene. It may seem cheap to buy, but polystyrene comes at a high environmental cost.

This is part of New York’s wider drive to recycle more – and recycling polystyrene containers is notoriously tricky. According to the US EP in 2008, less than 1% of polystyrene gets recycled. Our partners Vegware US are going to be busy helping NYC go completely compostable.
