vegware compostable black lids coffee cup

New! Black compostable hot cup lids

We’re delighted to introduce Vegware’s compostable black lids for hot drinks.

We made the lids to meet demands of the artisan coffee market and contract caterers for a black lid that looks great, but doesn’t compromise on eco credentials.

Sleek and stylish, the matte-finish lids can withstand heat up to 85°C. Made from plant-based CPLA, the black lids are certified compostable and much lower in embodied carbon than conventional plastic lids.

Available in two sizes to fit 8 – 20oz cups. Like all of Vegware’s packaging, they’re designed to be recycled with food waste.

vegware compostable coffee cup recycling manchester coffee festival

We’re Manchester Coffee Fest’s official sustainability partner!

We love a good coffee festival. Alongside the amazing smells and sights of coffee being made and the delicious samples on offer, it’s great to see new trends and innovation on the coffee scene. That’s why we’re delighted to announce we’re Manchester Coffee Festival’s first ever official sustainability partner!

Sustainability is a new focus for the festival. Spurred on by reports earlier in the year of coffee cup recycling issues, festival organisers Cup North decided it was time to take action. As well as inviting Vegware to be their official sustainability partner, the festival has also created the Vegware Sustainability Hub – an area dedicated to workshops and talks on waste and recycling issues in the coffee industry.

Taking place on the 5th-6th November, the festival will also bring together independent coffee shops, roasteries, importers and baristas from across the north of England for a weekend of talks, tastings and even a coffee-themed cinema.

Don’t miss Vegware’s workshop on coffee cup recycling, explaining the issues the UK currently faces and the compostable solution. Hosted by our Recycling Advisor Kate Chambers, you can catch us at 12pm on Saturday 5th and 2:30pm on Sunday 6th November.

Vegware eco packaging deli container deliciously ella

Supersize your salad with our new 48oz deli container

Salad lovers, rejoice! Our hinged lid deli container range has proved so popular we figured it was time to up the game and launch a larger size.

The 48oz container is perfect for generous portions of salads, deli treats and desserts. Light, strong, and stackable, the containers have a tight seal to keep food fresh. Like all of our products, they’re also completely compostable and made from plants, not plastic.

Bestselling cookbook author Deliciously Ella uses our hinged lid deli containers in The Mae Deli. In our recent interview with her she commented that, “We find that the Vegware packaging is much more sturdy and durable than plastic. Vegware have perfected the art of sealing the material tightly – which is so important. No one wants salad dressing running through their bag!”

As a nod to Deliciously Ella’s amazing food, we made her pomegranate, parsley and buckwheat salad to show off the new deli container. Check out the recipe here.

Deliciously Ella loves Vegware eco packaging

Deliciously Ella (otherwise known as Ella Mills) is the powerhouse behind three bestselling cookbooks, a world-famous food blog and an Instagram feed that would put your lunch to shame.

On a mission to create a home for her healthy eating ethos, Ella opened the Mae Deli in December 2015 with her husband, Matthew. The Deli is a cosy clean-eating haven, specialising in the tasty plant-based food Ella is famous for.

The Mae Deli has been using Vegware’s eco packaging since it opened. We caught up with Ella to find out why she decided to use Vegware and what exciting plans the Deli has in store.

Why was choosing compostable packaging for the Mae Deli important to you?

The Mae Deli by Deliciously Ella was started by my husband Matthew and I and our aim is to create delicious natural food, but always in a socially and environmentally responsible way. We focus on building a company that our team members and customers can be proud of. This means using only compostable and recyclable packaging, paying the London living wage and above to all of our team members, and bringing total transparency to everything we do; which includes sharing the recipes to our products.

What kind of responses have you had from your customers regarding the packaging?

Our customers are so pleased when we tell them that we use Vegware’s compostable packaging! We often get so many complaints saying that it’s a shame that we use so much plastic, so when we are able to tell our customers that is actually made out of plant based materials they are so happy. It’s such a great concept and we love that we are able to spread the word and educate people who don’t know what Vegware is.

Have you noticed any difference between plastic packaging and Vegware in terms of quality or how easy it is to use?

Completely! You may think that since it’s made from plant based material that the quality would be compromised, but it’s actually the total opposite. We find that the Vegware packaging is much more sturdy, durable, and you have perfected the art of sealing the material tightly – which is so important. No one wants salad dressing running through their bag!

What seasonal food trends are you excited about for autumn?

I love eating seasonally and find that come autumn I start craving heartier warming dishes. We have two new dishes at the deli that I am so excited to be launching soon. One is a five-bean chilli with warming hints of cumin and the other is a black rice dish with amazing autumn veggies like butternut squash and Brussel sprouts. And while I admittedly eat sweet potato all year around autumn gives the perfect excuse for feeling less guilty by doing so.

Our menu is based around vibrant and delicious salads so having packaging that protects and holds the dishes intact is so important and your product does this so well!

Pita Pit choose Vegware eco packaging to break into UK market

With 600+ stores worldwide, Pita Pit‘s health-conscious fast casual dining has fans across the globe. Serving up fresh, Mediterranean inspired pitas with sustainably sourced ingredients, Pita Pit wanted food packaging that echoed their eco-friendly ethos.

Since expanding into the UK in 2013, Pita Pit have been using a fully customised range of completely compostable Vegware packaging in all of their stores. With 5 stores already open, a further 20 are set for the coming year. Pita Pit explain, “We’re a new brand in the UK and Vegware’s custom print service has been a fantastic marketing tool for us to help establish brand recognition!”

Thanks to their three bin system – a first for a UK high-street chain – Pita Pit ensure that recycling rates are high in their stores. A policy has been introduced in-store where staff strike up a conversation with customers about the compostable packaging . Coffee cup recycling – it’s time for a change

Have you seen the news? Coffee cup recycling is making the headlines again. Last night on BBC1, Hugh’s War on Waste revealed that almost all of the 7 million coffee cups we use every day in the UK go to landfill or incineration, despite many of them claiming to be recyclable.

“The truth is,” says Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, ”they are barely recyclable at all – in the everyday, commonly understood sense of the word. They cannot be recycled through any of the normal public waste collection services – who are consistently diverting them to be incinerated or sent to landfill.”

We believe it’s time for a change.

With 10,000 cups disposed of every two minutes, consumers are demanding action. Here’s our compostable solution:

New film! River Cottage Fair goes compostable with Vegware

River Cottage’s Spring Food Fair achieved an impressive 72% recycling rate by serving all food on Vegware compostable packaging; their best ever result. Our new film shows you how we did it.

Aiming to beat the UK event average of 15%, River Cottage trialled Vegware’s compostable packaging and recycling support. After the three-day event, 680kg of used takeaway packaging was composted with food waste at Viridor’s nearby composting facility. In less than 12 weeks this soil improver will be available to River Cottage’s gardens and local farmers.

River Cottage IG

We’re taking over River Cottage’s Instagram!

Our pals at River Cottage are kindly handing over the reins of their gorgeous Instagram account to the Vegware team this week (18th – 24th July).

In May we helped the River Cottage Spring Food Fair go completely compostable and achieve their best ever recycling rates of 72% – far beyond the UK events average of 15%. We’re launching a new film this week to show exactly how we did it, and will be taking over the River Cottage Instagram feed in the run up to it with lots of sneak peeks, how-tos and Vegware facts. There might even be a picture of us with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, but we couldn’t possibly confirm nor deny such rumours…

Keep an eye out for our film launch and follow @rivercottagehq to see what mischief we get up to. If you don’t already follow us on Instagram you can find us @vegware.
